Northern Arizona Elite star will represent Team USA in Copenhagen, Denmark
FLAGSTAFF, (AZ) – March 3, 2014 – United States Track and Field announced its roster for the 2014 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships this morning and it includes Northern Arizona Elite’s Matthew Llano. Llano was chosen based on his 1:01:47, fifth-place finish at the U.S. Half Marathon Championships in Houston on January 19.
Joining Llano on the men’s team will be Josphat Boit (Asics Mammoth Track Club), Tyler Pennel (ZAP Fitness), Shadrack Biwott (SRA Elite) and Fernando Cabada (Newton). All five team members ran in Houston, one of the deepest half marathons in United States history. Llano’s 1:01:47 there made him the 17th fastest American of all time over 13.1 miles.
Llano said making the team was a big goal.
“I’m thrilled to be selected to represent Team USA at the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships,” Llano said. “It has long been a goal of mine to represent our country in international competition, especially at the World Championship level, so to see that goal come to fruition is an accomplishment of which I am very proud.”
The course in Copenhagen is said to be very flat and fast with only 14 meters of elevation gain over the entire route. The men’s race will begin at 12:55pm local time and average high temperatures in Copenhagen in March hover around 45 degrees fahrenheit.
Northern Arizona Elite coach Ben Rosario said those conditions should be perfect for Llano.
“Matt’s in very good form right now,” Rosario said. “In fact, he’s ahead of where he was before Houston at this point so I certainly think a personal best is possible in Denmark.”
